Varicose Vein
Varicose veins are often thought to be the same as spider veins; however, there are differences in these two vein problems. Spider veins appear on the surface of the skin as tiny bursts or webs. Varicose veins are larger rope-like veins that most commonly develop on the thighs, calves, feet and back of knees.
While some varicose veins merely pose a cosmetic problem, some cases may cause substantial discomfort as well as health complications. If you are suffering from painful varicose veins that ache, swell or make your legs feel heavy and tired, you should seek medical attention. Contact the Acadiana Vascular office if your varicose veins are causing you pain.

Peripheral Vascular Disease
Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a form of atherosclerosis that occurs when your arteries fail to bring enough blood to your lower body. PVD is used to reference any vascular disease that does not directly affect the heart or brain.
Although many of the people who have PVD do not suffer from any symptoms, there are some symptoms that may indicate PVD. Pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in your legs or feet when walking or exercising, an aching pain in your feet or toes while at rest, a leg or foot sore that will not heal, and legs or feet that are cold or change in color may be signs of PVD. Experiencing painful symptoms while resting indicates a more serious problem.

- Angioplasty
- Stenting
- Atherectomy

Carotid Artery Disease
The condition that occurs when the major arteries in your neck become narrowed or blocked with plaque is carotid artery disease. This vascular disease poses serious health concerns since these arteries provide the blood supply for your brain. If left untreated carotid artery disease can cause a stroke.
Carotid artery disease is most often caused by artery hardening. However, your chances of developing carotid artery disease may increase as a result of carotid aneurysm disease, fibro muscular dysplasia, or diabetes. Additionally other health factors may increase your risk.
Carotid Artery Treatments
- Surgery
- Angioplasty and stenting
Aneurysms
When blood passes through a weakened part of an artery a bulge known as an aneurysm is developed. An aneurysm can occur in any sized artery. Serious health risks can arise if the bulge of the aneurysm continues to swell because the blood vessel may rupture. This could cause fatal internal bleeding. A burst aneurysm in the head could also lead to a stroke. Although some may lead to serious problems, not all aneurysms are life threatening.
