The condition that occurs when the major arteries in your neck become narrowed or blocked with plaque is carotid artery disease. This vascular disease poses serious health concerns since these arteries provide the blood supply for your brain. If left untreated carotid artery disease can cause a stroke.
Carotid artery disease is most often caused by artery hardening. However, your chances of developing carotid artery disease may increase as a result of carotid aneurysm disease, fibro muscular dysplasia, or diabetes. Additionally other health factors may increase your risk.
This exam visualizes any plaque formation in the main arteries that deliver blood to the brain. It is important to note that carotid artery blockage is one of the major causes of stroke.
Since Medicare and most insurance companies will not pay for screening services the Acadiana Vascular Center does not file insurance claims for these tests. Each exam costs only $45, or have all three vascular screening exams done for only $99.00. A physician's order is not required to for these exams and your results will be mailed to both you and your physician.
